Types of eclipse
A solar eclipse happens at new moon when the Moon passes between Earth and the Sun. It is total where the Moon covers the whole Sun, annular when the Moon is too far away to cover it and leaves a ring of light, hybrid when it is total along part of its path and annular elsewhere, and partial everywhere the Moon covers only a portion of the Sun.
A lunar eclipse happens at full moon when the Moon passes through Earth's shadow. It is total when the whole Moon is inside the dark umbra, often turning coppery red, partial when only part of it is, and penumbral when the Moon only crosses the faint outer shadow, which is hard to notice by eye. A lunar eclipse is visible from the entire night side of Earth at once.
