Watching the Draconids in 1978
The shower is active for weeks, but rates climb sharply in the day or two around the peak. Watch on the night of and the nights on either side, best from the end of twilight until around midnight: the radiant is highest early in the night and sinks later, so this is an evening shower rather than a pre-dawn one. Moderate moonlight: fainter meteors will be lost. Get away from streetlights, lie back, and let your eyes adapt for twenty minutes; no telescope or binoculars needed, since meteors streak across a wide patch of sky.
