What makes a supermoon
The Moon's orbit is an ellipse, so its distance from Earth swings between about 356,000 and 406,000 km each month. When a full moon lands near perigee, the closest point, it is popularly called a supermoon. There is no official definition; this site uses full moons closer than 360,000 km, which yields three or four a year. A supermoon appears up to 14% wider and 30% brighter than a full moon at apogee, a difference that is real but subtle to the eye, most striking when the Moon is rising near the horizon.
