About the Waxing Gibbous

Between first quarter and full moon the Moon is waxing gibbous: more than half lit and growing each night. It rises in the afternoon, dominates the evening sky and sets after midnight.

Its brightness climbs quickly during this phase, from about a tenth of full-moon brightness at first quarter to full within a week, because the Moon's rough surface reflects most strongly when the Sun is directly behind the observer.

Lore and folklore

The swelling moon was traditionally a time of increase: livestock fattened, crops filled out, and anything meant to grow was tended now. In some traditions it was the best time to gather herbs, when their vigour was thought to peak.

Gibbous comes from the Latin for hump-backed, a plain description of the bulging shape.

Trivia

  • The Moon's brightness is not proportional to the lit area; a half moon is only about a tenth as bright as a full moon.
  • The waxing gibbous is the phase most often noticed in daytime, high in the afternoon sky.
  • Around this phase the bright crater rays, streaks of ejected rock, become obvious to the naked eye.
  • The gibbous Moon rises later each day by anything from 30 to 70 minutes depending on the season.

This month's full moon: the Worm Moon

The last full moon of winter, named for the earthworms and beetle larvae that appear as the ground thaws.

Another reading credits beetle larvae emerging from tree bark. The Crow Moon, Sap Moon and Lenten Moon are alternatives. When it falls before the March equinox it is the last full moon of winter; after it, the first of spring, which sets the date of Easter in the Christian calendar.

Lore

The March moon marked the thaw: the return of earthworms, robins and rising sap. In Europe it was the Lenten Moon when it fell before the equinox, or the Paschal Moon that fixes Easter when it fell after. Old lore watched it for signs of a late frost.

Trivia

  • Easter is the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after March 21, so the Worm Moon or Pink Moon decides the date.
  • Some scholars trace the Worm Moon to beetle larvae emerging from bark rather than to earthworms.
  • The equinox full moon rises almost exactly due east.

This month's full moon: the Blue Moon

A second full moon in one calendar month. It happens about every two and a half years and has nothing to do with color.

The monthly definition became popular after a 1946 Sky and Telescope article misread the Maine Farmers' Almanac, which used an older seasonal rule: the third full moon in a season that has four. Both definitions are in use today. The phrase "once in a blue moon" predates both and simply means rarely.

Lore

The phrase once in a blue moon is older than any astronomical definition and originally meant something absurd or never. The modern rule, a second full moon in one calendar month, spread from a 1946 magazine article and a 1980s radio programme. Genuinely blue-looking moons have been seen after huge volcanic eruptions and forest fires, when smoke particles scatter red light.

Trivia

  • Monthly Blue Moons happen about every 2.7 years.
  • The older seasonal rule calls the third full moon of a season with four the Blue Moon.
  • After Krakatoa erupted in 1883 the Moon appeared blue or green for nearly two years.

How to read this moon calendar

Each day shows the Moon as it looks from Sydney at midday local time, with the illuminated percentage, moonrise and moonset. Days with a principal phase show the exact local time the phase occurs. Because the Moon moves about 50 minutes later each day, roughly once a month there is a date with no moonrise or no moonset at all.

From the southern hemisphere the Moon appears flipped: a waxing moon is lit on the left. The icons on this page follow that view.

The eight phases of the Moon

New Moon

New Moon

The Moon sits between Earth and the Sun. Its lit side faces away from us, so it is invisible in the night sky. A new lunar month begins.

Waxing Crescent

Waxing Crescent

A thin sliver grows each evening after sunset. Look low in the west shortly after dusk.

First Quarter

First Quarter

Half the disc is lit. The Moon rises around midday and sets around midnight, so it is high in the sky at sunset.

Waxing Gibbous

Waxing Gibbous

More than half lit and growing. It rises in the afternoon and shines most of the night.

Full Moon

Full Moon

The whole face is lit. It rises at sunset and sets at sunrise. Each full moon carries a traditional name.

Waning Gibbous

Waning Gibbous

The lit portion shrinks. It rises after sunset and is still up in the morning sky.

Last Quarter

Last Quarter

Half lit again, on the opposite side. It rises around midnight and is best seen in the early morning.

Waning Crescent

Waning Crescent

A thinning sliver before dawn in the east, fading toward the next new moon.
