Reading the 2047 new moon calendar
Each row is the instant the Moon passes between Earth and the Sun. The Moon itself is invisible for a day or so either side, and the "moonless evenings" column gives the practical window: the nights when no Moon is in the sky after dark, from the last thin waning crescent before new moon to the first evening crescent after it. Those are the nights to choose for meteor showers, the Milky Way and faint deep-sky objects.
Distance matters less at new moon than at full, since there is nothing to see, but a new moon near perigee (a supermoon new moon) raises higher than usual spring tides.
